Patients with lowered immune defenses, and in some hospitals, poor adherence to hygiene protocols, allow HAIs to thrive. Furthermore, antibiotics are widely used in hospitals, which tends to select for hardy, resistant strains of bacteria. When such resistance genes lie on mobile genetic elements, they can even jump between bacterial species, potentially leading to novel diseases.
"Here we show that hospital sink drains host bacterial populations that change over time, despite impeccable cleaning protocols in the particular hospital we looked at," said Dr. Margarita Gomila, a professor at the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain, and the senior author of a study in Frontiers In Microbiology.
"These results highlight that controlling bacterial growth in drains, and preventing colonization by new strains of such hard-to-disinfect niches, is likely a global problem."

Waffle House servers are firing back at the breakfast chain, claiming they have been improperly paid for years.
They allege the company forces them to perform janitorial and dishwashing tasks at tipped wages, saving Waffle House up to $46.8 million annually. One employee making such accusations, Melissa “Kat” Steach, a server in Marietta, Georgia, navigates her 69-hour workweeks by serving food and ringing up orders for tips. However, she revealed that she also spends up to three hours per shift mopping floors, scrubbing toilets, and washing dishes, duties that go unpaid or are compensated at tipped rates far below the standard wage.

The commercial segment, which includes hospitality establishments, spas and salons, food service establishments, hospitals and healthcare centers, institutions, and offices, is the primary driver of the contract cleaning services market. The hospitality sector, a significant end-user in this segment, is experiencing growth due to the completion of new hotel projects, particularly in emerging economies like
India and China, as well as in the Middle East. This growth creates opportunities for contract cleaning service providers to expand their customer base. The healthcare sector is another major contributor, driven by mandatory government standards for clean facilities and the need to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

PITETI, Romania (WKRC) - A 52-year-old janitor was killed by a tiger at Piteti Zoo after failing to follow safety procedures, according to Romanian newspaper Adevrul. The incident occurred Monday morning when the man entered the tiger's enclosure to clean it.
The tiger had bitten the janitor on the head, according to Adevrul and The Sun. The zoo's safety guidelines required the tiger to be moved to a high-fenced cage behind a security door before cleaning begins. However, the janitor reportedly forgot to lower the security door, allowing the tiger to return while he was still inside.

A cleaning company has been fined $171,000 after federal investigators found 11 children working a "dangerous" overnight shift at a meat processing plant in Iowa.
The U.S. Labor Department said in a statement that it found the children working for sanitation company Qvest LLC at the Seaboard Triumph Foods pork factory in Sioux City, Iowa.
The children were employed to "use corrosive cleaners to clean head splitters, jaw pullers, bandsaws, neck clippers and other equipment at the Seaboard Triumph Foods facility from at least September 2019 through September 2023," the statement said.
It is illegal under U.S. law for anyone younger than 18 to work in meat processing. Qvest must pay the fine and not engage in "oppressive child labor," as per a court filing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa.

Cleaners at Charlotte airport, an American Airlines hub, go on strike during Thanksgiving travel week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Workers who clean airplanes, remove trash and help with wheelchairs at Charlotte’s airport, one of the nation’s busiest, went on strike Monday during a busy week of holiday travel to demand higher wages.
The Service Employees International Union announced the strike in a statement early Monday, saying the workers would demand “an end to poverty wages and respect on the job during the holiday travel season.” The strike was expected to last 24 hours, said union spokesperson Sean Keady.
Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services cast ballots Friday to authorize the work stoppage at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a hub for American Airlines. The two companies contract with American, one of the world’s biggest carriers, to provide services such as cleaning airplane interiors, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs.
